Barter Island: A Novel
Author: Peter Scott
Some thirty years after islanders repulsed an attempted invasion of Barter Island by a Nazi U-boat in Peter Scott’s first novel, Something in the Water, they face another invasion, this one by American refugees from the turbulent social upheavals of the late 1960s. In this book, the young people who come to land on Barter Island are hippies, Vietnam veterans, and back-to-the-landers, all bringing with them beliefs and behaviors that seem to threaten the traditional island ways and outrage the islanders’ sense of right and wrong.
About the Author: PETER SCOTT is a veteran of the Vietnam War and Barter Island, his third book, is based in part on his experience moving to Maine after the war in search of escape and recovery. Scott is a private-school teacher and lives in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
