Saturn Press
Location: Swan's Island, Maine
About “Saturn Press” is paraphrased (edited) by Northern Tides’ owners to fit this webpage. Saturn Press incorporates the traditional letterpress printing using tactile qualities they knew the process could offer since 1986, because the equipment was dirt cheap and being discarded by virtually every American printer that still had any of the old “heavy metal” around. Over the past 16 or so years, they have created one of the best letterpress products on the market today. Saturn Press’ letterpress resurgence was met with curiosity. When they look back at that early impoverished struggle to make it happen (against everyone’s well-intentioned advice) they can only say: “Who’d a thunk it?” Today Jim the printer and Jane the designer felt almost as if they are Grandpa and Grandma Letterpress. An American Gothic portrait painted with lead type, and T-square, and still no computers.
Saturn Press advertises within their 2010 Letterpress, Greeting Cards & Papers Catalog the following: Amidst the Deluge:
"Shopping the internet is like standing beneath Niagara Falls with a teaspoon in order to get a sip of water. So Saturn Press provides you the alternative."
Northern Tides welcomes you to visit our shop to review Saturn Press’ Greeting and Note Cards, but also fines this Press one of the most interesting printing presses in Maine due to their traditional practices and talents to produce letterpress the old fashioned way – no photo-shop, computers, or internet plastic surgery.
