Claudia Mahlman
Location: Lubec, Maine
By eight years of age, the artist enjoyed portrait work, and was proficient at copying other’s art, especially technical illustrations from her 1953 encyclopedia. Retiring from teaching in Bangor, and moving to Lubec in 2001, Claudia began painting again. She took an evening-adult education art class with Lubec’s Agatha Hood. Most of her realistically painted works capture Lubec’s views and architecture, particularly scenes from outside her husband’s family home on Main Street.
Her primary media is acrylics, but she also uses oil pastels, inks, watercolors and pastels. When young she painted with oils, loved Indian inks and drawing with graphite pencils.
Most of her works are smaller than 11x14”, including many miniatures (nine sq. inches or less). If there is one characteristic that summarizes her style it is “detailed.” Capturing nature’s finest points is an artistic choice. More than one-hundred fifty projects have been completed since 2002.
