Joyce L. Youngberg
Location: Tyngsboro, MA/East Walkerfield, NH
After receiving my BFA in Painting I put it aside and embarked on a “career” as an Air Force wife. Along the way, I experimented in other media: ceramic sculpture, bauernmalerei, and handmade paper created from harvested fibers. Later I brought all these experiences, plus observations of world travel to the elementary classroom as an art teacher in New York and Massachusetts. I reveled in allowing the next generation of artists to discover the beauty of the everyday. Finally, having retired from teaching in 2007, I now have time to devote to my own artwork, both watercolor and handmade paper. Have art bag; will travel!
Each of my works is a study. I’m fascinated with using composition to express the geometry and the play of light on the weathered New England textures of concrete, clapboard, and shingles. I’ve been heavily influenced by Homer and Hopper. And I often return to a subject to paint it again wrapped in snow or bathed in sunlight just as Christo wraps buildings, islands, and valley walls to give the viewer a new way of seeing things.
