Nearly everyone knows that commercial fishing is -- and always has been -- the lifeblood of the economy along the Maine coast. Yet, this "industry," if that term is even appropriate, too often remains faceless. Moreover, many of us think only of lobstering when we consider what goes on in the waters adjacent to the Maine shoreline.
Here, photographer Nance Trueworthy and commercial-fishing journalist Mike Crowley paint a handsome -- and accurate -- portrait of the men and women who earn a varied living along the coast. In Maine, inshore fishing is more than just a business; it’s a lifestyle, one that defines each day not only for those who fish, but for their families.
While lobsters grab most of the headlines, they represent only one of the fisheries that shape life in the land of the pointed firs. Thanks to Trueworthy’s thoughtful color images and Crowley’s easily digested descriptions, you will discover a magical world of alewives, softshell clams, sea urchins, rock crabs, herring, and northern shrimp, to mention just a few.
Photographer Information: NANCE TRUEWORTHY has been a professional photographer for 33 years, specializing in national and international stock, as well as assignment work. Her color images have appeared in books, on cards, in nationally marketed calendars, and in magazines such as Time, Sports Illustrated, and Newsweek. Nance’s work was also chosen by the Smithsonian Institution for the museum’s popular exhibit "Ocean Planet." She lives in Portland, Maine.
Author Information: MICHAEL CROWLEY, who wrote the text to go along with Nance’s photos, has been a commercial fisherman, longshoreman, boatbuilder, and writer. His articles have appeared in numerous marine publications, including National Fisherman, where he has covered fisheries in Maine and elsewhere in New England as an editor for more than twenty years. He lives in Belfast, Maine.
