In the beginning of A Sweet-Sounding Place, young Moses is found as an infant next to the body of his dying mother, an escaped slave. Moses is brought to Boston and raised with the family of a baker. He has grown to be a willful teenager by the time the Civil War breaks out. After Moses's uncle enlists in Col. Robert Shaw's 54th Massachusetts Regiment -- the first and most famous black regiment of the war -- Moses is keen on following him, hoping to serve his country and find out about his mother.
